Sokoban 30th anniversary 1982-2012

Without doubt, the most famous puzzle of all time is the Level 1 of the "Original" collection. But how many different versions have been made of this mythical puzzle? I have gathered here a total of 48 versions. However, it is likely that there will be more on platforms that I don't know. If you know any version that is not here, can you send me a PNG image and information about the game? Thank you very much. If I find new versions I will add to this post.

Super Sokobang

Super Sokobang
Akita Multimédia (Canada)
http://www.akitamultimedia.com/produits/sokobang.php
Released: November 2009
Platform: Windows98, ME, 2000, NT, XP, Vista,
Windows7 / Mac
License: Commercial (registered version: $ 9.95)
Download trial version:
http://www.akitamultimedia.com/logiciels/sokobang.exe

Some time ago I wanted to talk about this game. It is the best game of Sokoban released in recent years, especially by its excellent graphic design.

In fact, it's a Sokoban variant with additional elements that make the game more interesting and attractive. There are boxes/goals of different colors, rooms in the dark (to enlighten them, should be up to them a light bulb), closed rooms (to open the door, you have to carry a box-key and open the door), conveyor belts ... and trucks to transport boxes, moving forward/backward. This last is the most interesting element, mixing Sokoban with Rush Hour, the other great family of sliding puzzles.

There are a total of 40 levels, some "giants", that occupy several screens. In addition, you can download other 5 extra levels ($0.49 each). A standard player can complete all levels in about 6 hours.

There is a ranking score for each puzzle, according to time spent in resolving it. On the website of Akita Multimédia there is a Ranking with the general classification. It is curious to note that among the top 20 players classified, 16 have more than 40 years, and there is only a boy 11 year old ... Do children and adolescents do not like to think? It is a little disturbing...

Supports two languages: French and English. The trial version allows you to play for 30 minutes.

Graphic design is excellent. All items -boxes, goals, walls...- are displayed with great clarity and sharpness. The design is what I like most about this game. The handling is also very good.

Some levels are adaptations of the "Original" collection (level 2 = Original 1, 26 = O-12, 32 (second part) = O-38, 35 = O-43 ...).

Summary:

The best
- Graphic design.
- The concept of the game, with interesting additional items.

The worst
- 40 levels are very few (60 or 80 levels would have been ideal...). Moreover, some levels are too easy, even considering that the game is intended for children.

Oldies - 8 levels from "Sokoban" (1998) by William Fraser

"Sokoban" by William Fraser is an excellent online game in Java, active on the Internet since October 1998. It contains 190 levels. All the puzzles are made of known authors, except eight: the levels 51-58. The relationship of puzzles is the following:

Levels 1-50 are the "Original" collection.
Levels 51-58 are by author unknown.
Levels 59-98 come from XSokoban (levels 59 and 97 are easy versions of XSokoban levels 52 and 89, respectively).
Levels 99-190 are from Yoshio Murase, collections "handmade" and "autogenerated".

"Sokoban" (1998) by William Fraser, level 53

The eight levels "unknown"
51-58 are quite good, in old "Thinking Rabbit style". Especially interesting are the levels 53 (see image above) and 57.

Some time ago I wrote to William Fraser and I asked him if the puzzles 51-58 were his. This was his answer:

"I can't remember where levels 51 to 59 came from. The origional (first levels) cam from a spectrum program, and from 59 onwards came from a Japanese site (that I put a link to on the page). I think that up to level 59 came from the spectrum game (that would be about 20 years old by now), as I don't recall getting any levels elsewhere, but it's so long ago I could be wrong."

Therefore, levels 51-58 come from a Spectrum game. The ZX Spectrum is an 8-bit personal home computer released in the United Kingdom in 1982.

In addition, says William Fraser in the "Readme" (May 2000) in your Java game: "I copied most of the levels from a 8 year old spectrum game that was in turn based on an earlier game." Thus, the Spectrum game must be in by 1990.

I have searched in "ZX Spectrum Museum", but I have not found any Sokoban game... Then, I have searched in "World of Spectrum", and I have found up to 7 versions of Sokoban prior to 2005.

"Sokoban" by Hacker Chris, 1991, for ZX Spectrum

Finally, in one of the games, I have located three levels of Fraser. It's "Sokoban" by Hacker Chris (WE, Poland), 1991. The levels of Fraser 56-58 are the last three of the game of Hacker Chris, levels 53-55. The last level of Chris (#55) is unsolvable, but in the version of Fraser appears arranged, perhaps by the own Fraser (?).

The other puzzles by Chris 1-50 are the "Original" collection (taken from the IBM version of Spectrum HoloByte). Levels 51 and 52 is the level 18 of the "Original", repeated (#51 is an easy version).

I have not found who are the other five levels of Fraser 51-55.

To play online "Sokoban" by Hacker Chris, click here

"Sokoban" by Hacker Chris, level 54

A curiosity. The puzzle of Evgeny Grigoriev, Grigr2001 #1 Bardak, first in the collection, seems to be a remodel of Fraser #57 (= Chris #54, see image above).

You can download the 8 levels from William Fraser here:

The question is: Who are the others 5 puzzles of Fraser 51-55? Can anybody provide more information?

Sokoban for beginners

I have a granddaughter 12 years old, from Italian father and Spanish mother, and she's very clever. She has begun to play Sokoban and asked me: "Which collection do you recommend?" Well, I indicate below (in chronological order) some of the most interesting and fun collections for those who have never played Sokoban, and now begin for the first time.

You can download all collections here:

The first thing you need is a program of Sokoban, which allows you to import and play the collections of Sokoban available (generally in .txt or .xsb format). There are many programs (see "Sokoban for Windows"). The most commonly used by hobbyists are as follows, all are free, that you can download on the Internet:

Sokoban YASC, by Brian Damgaard
Sokoban++, by Joris Wit
YSokoban, by George Petrov
JSoko, by Matthias Meger

All programs have their advantages and disadvantages. Choose the one you like more. I used Sokoban YASC, because it has a great advantage for a player impatient like me: the automatic detection of "deadlocks", which prevents me from many mistakes.

"Soko-Ban", Spectrum HoloByte, 1988 (Apple II version)

Level 29 (Apple II version)

Thinking Rabbit
Original
1988

This is the first collection of Sokoban marketed in the West, by the legendary Californian software company (already missing) Spectrum HoloByte ("Soko-Ban", ASCII Corp., Spectrum HoloByte, 1988, known as the "Original" collection). In fact, the puzzles comes from previous Japanese collections, although some were modified specifically for this collection.

Most of players started to play Sokoban with this collection, and I think it is a excellent way to start the game. Thus, I recommend you start here.

Yoshio Murase
autogenerated
1997-1998

It is the most classic and famous mini puzzles collection. 52 small puzzles obtained with the help of software, but well selected by Yoshio Murase.

Yoshio Murase website:
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/ai/yoshio/sokoban/index.html

Download original collection here:
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/ai/yoshio/sokoban/auto52/index.html

monry
First Step
1999

"First Step" is one of the collections for beginners more excellent, and one of my all time favorites. Each puzzle is built from an "idea", so that the whole of the 100 puzzles in the collection is a catalog of the basic "themes" of Sokoban.

The Japanese "monry" is the author of another similar collection, "monry-light" (1998-1999, 114 puzzles), of incredible quality, but higher difficulty.

Jacques Duthen
Sokogen-990602
1999

It is my favorite collection. After the "Original" collection, I recommend continue with this set of 78 mini puzzles with only 2, 3 or 4 boxes.

With regard to Sokogen, Jack wrote in the Yahoo group (February 3, 2010):

After I finished my collection "Dimitri & Yorick", I found it very difficult and time consuming to create sokoban levels by hand.

So I wrote a program called Sokogen (which stands for Sokoban Generator) to generate sokoban levels.

It produced many levels, some of which I kept in the collection Sokogen-990602 which I finished to collect on Jun 2, 1999.

You can download the original collection on the Internet Archive, here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20000116234012/http://perso.club-internet.fr/duthen/SOKOBAN-HTML/sokogen-990602.skm

Old Jacques Duthen website (on the Internet Archive):
http://web.archive.org/web/20051130031142/http://duthen.club.fr/sokoban/index.html

Bunny Tale (by Adam George, SuperSoft, 2006) is a great compact program, with a nice design, and with two collections: "KidsLand" and "EldersLand", that, in fact, are the collections of Jacques Duthen, "Dimitri & Yorick" and "Sokogen". You can download here.

Aymeric du Peloux
Microcosmos
1996-2000

In fact, this small collection of 40 levels is appropriate for experienced players, because there are several difficult levels. If you can not solve a level, leave it, and try the next level :)

If this collection you find it too difficult, you can start by Minicosmos (40 levels).

David W. Skinner
Microban
2000, 2002 y 2009

Classic collection and one of the most popular. I include the three first series of Microban, which are perhaps the most beautiful.

Skinner says on its website:

The Microban collection is good for beginners and children. Most of the puzzles are small and illustrate a particular concept. More experienced players should also find them interesting, since there is a wide variety and many can be surprisingly tricky at first glance.

Hirohiko Nakamiya
魔物の番人 (Demon Keeper)
2000-2002
魔物の番人 (Demon Keeper) (2002) is one of the most beautiful and interesting collections that can be played online on the Internet. It is available (in Java) here.

The online collection is about 2002, but many of the puzzles are from previous collections ("Practice levels", "Joy levels" and "Hirohiko Nakamiya", June-July 2000). In total there are 56 levels, divided into 8 stages of 7 levels each (Note: the puzzles of the last two stages 7 and 8 are very difficult.)

François Marques
Novoban
2001

Beautiful and interesting collection of 50 small puzzles built by hand, very well-studied.

Comment of François Marques on his website:

Cette collection de 50 tableaux est destinée aux joueurs novices. La difficulté des niveaux est croissante. La série se termine par quelques tableaux de niveau intermédiaire. J'ai soumis ces problèmes à mes neveux de 10 et 14 ans qui en sont venus à bout en une journée (ce qui est pas mal du tout pour des débutants complets). Cependant, si vous êtes expert, résoudre toute la série en moins de 45 minutes est certainement un challenge difficile à remplir.

François Marques website:
http://sokoban.online.fr/collections.html

Ghislain Martin
SokoStation
2001-2006, 2009 and 2012

"SokoStation" is an extensive collection of 380 puzzles, very imaginative and funny, built over the years 2001-2012. Ghislain regularly adds new puzzles to the collection.

Martí Homs
Homz Challenge
2007

Martí Homs is a computer engineer from Barcelona (Spain), and my fellow countryman.

Years ago generated an incredible collection of 764 small puzzles, distributed in several series. In his old website wrote this note:

All the levels have been created by M. Homs, using many generation techniques, such as combinatorial systems, graph theory, restricted genetic algorithms, or brute-force exploring.

I made a selection of 80 puzzles, most of these have only 3 boxes, which I called "Homz Challenge". I highly recommend this collection!

See in my blog an interview to Martí Homs:

Old Martí Homs website (on the Internet Archive):
http://web.archive.org/web/20090505071634/http://sapiens.ya.com/sokobanhomz/intro.html

Jordi Domènech
Pufiban
2009

Collection of 170 micro puzzles with 2, 3 or 4 boxes, sorted by increasing difficulty (the last few levels are quite difficult...). In each puzzle shows the limit of moves to solve optimally.

First steps
2010-2017

"First steps" is a selection of small puzzles of "Magic Sokoban" and other collections for those who start to play Sokoban. There you will find all the typical problems of Sokoban. Enjoy!

Erim Sever
Fourth collection for beginners
2010

All Erim puzzles are interesting and fun, and recommended for the novice players, but I prefer this "Fourth collection for beginners" of 50 levels (within the general collection of Erim Sever corresponds to levels erim186 to erim235).

Erim Sever website:
http://www.erimsever.com/sokoban.htm

Přemysl Zíka
Gradus ad Olympo
1990-2015

Přemysl Zíka is, in my opinion, one of the best creators of Sokoban currently. The first half of this selection of his levels is relatively easy, but in the second half there are some levels quite difficult, suitable for experienced players. Recommended!

Top 10 remodels, January-July 2012

Throughout this year 2012, in the Chinese forum MF8 have posted some excellent remodels. I have selected 10, which I think are the most beautiful. All 10 remodels are *very difficult*, and are only recommended for experienced and advanced players.

In each remodel, I provide the best results for now (by moves and by pushes). If you can improve any of the results, please send me it by email.

You can download the all 10
